<p>Exercises can be adapted at each stage of pregnancy to allow for gentler or more focused exercise, but should not be continued if any discomfort is experienced.</p>
<p>Pilates will not place strain on the joints or back. In fact the back will be strengthened as will the stomach and muscles around the pelvic area &#8211; allowing for an easier pregnancy, delivery and recovery.</p>
<h3><strong>Pilates In The First Trimester Of Pregnancy </strong></h3>
<p>In the first three months, the changing hormones in the body can make you feel exhausted and nauseous, but gentle exercise can even be done while lying in bed. Often a little exercise can actually energise the body and make you feel mentally and physically better. And the relaxation techniques will relax both body and mind.</p>
<h3><strong>Pilates In The Second Trimester Of Pregnancy </strong></h3>
<p>The second trimester is, for most woman, the easiest part of pregnancy. Although the body is changing and expanding, energy levels are generally high and this should be when the exercises should be maximised to give you every advantage for the following months.</p>
<h3><strong>Pilates In The Third Trimester Of Pregnancy </strong></h3>
<p>In the third trimester, women tend to feel heavy and uncomfortable and hormones designed to loosen the pelvic joints can cause back pain. The additional weight of the baby can throw your centre of balance, legs can become swollen and varicose veins can develop. Pilates helps all of these conditions associated with pregnancy by strengthening the central or &#8220;core&#8221; muscles which in turn leads to improved posture and circulation.</p>
<h3><strong>Benefits Of Pilates During Labour</strong></h3>
<p>The improvement in muscle tone and circulation gained through practicing pilates will also be of value during labour. An improved circulation allows an increased oxygen supply to the womb and this is less distressing for the baby. And of course the breathing techniques used in Pilates can help with the control of breathing during childbirth.</p>
<h3><strong>Resuming Pilates After Childbirth</strong></h3>
<p>Women can generally return to Pilates four to six weeks after delivery, or eight to twelve weeks after a Caesarean section. Your doctor will advise you on when your body is ready.</p>
<p>Pilates will help your body regain its shape and tone and restrengthen muscles that have been weakened during your pregnancy.</p>
<p>Exercises can be adapted to individual needs, so whether you have had a vaginal or Caesarian delivery, a safe workout can be developed to target particular muscle groups.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">I have helped many clients over the years with the exciting and rewarding exercise program called “Pilates”. Through this program clients have seen great improvement with their body alignment, posture, strength, flexibility and core stability.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;ve also seen many people try group Pilates classes on their own only to be frustrated by its unique terminology and set of exercises.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Pilates is a low impact high result workout.</strong> It constantly uses your core muscles (abdominals, pelvic floor, transverse muscles, obliques, lats and muscles supporting the back &amp; spine) by focusing first on your intrinsic, smaller stabilizing muscles, then building outward to the superficial, more surface muscles.</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: left;">Pilates is really about “total wellness”; feeling great both mind and body. While there are many benefits to Pilates the one I&#8217;m most excited about is the feeling of better body awareness and increased energy. You literally feel lighter on your feet as your spine lengthens and your body opens.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: left;">The key to a successful Pilates program is to learn the fundamentals BEFORE you get too far involved in group classes. The problem is, if you start off with the wrong basics you will have limited results, may experience discomfort in areas that are not meant to, and even risk real injury. Not to mention, its much more difficult to re-learn correct technique once you&#8217;ve practiced it the wrong way.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Here&#8217;s a quick test to see if you&#8217;re ready to take full advantage of your next Pilates class: are you able to demonstrate correct form (or at least know what it is) on techniques such as <strong>correct breathing, neutral spine, pelvic floor lifts, head floats, pelvic stability</strong>&#8230; etc. If not, you probably should get some individual help in understanding these crucial terms and techniques to get you back on the right track. A couple of private sessions from a certified Pilates instructor would be a great place to start.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><em>Once you&#8217;ve learned the fundamentals you&#8217;ll be able to pick up much more easily many of the over 300 exercises that Joseph Pilates (founder of Pilates exercises) has put together.</em></strong></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Not being able to move about freely without experiencing pain is utter torture. No one should have to live that way. Sadly, many will continue to live that way because they are in the dark about things that can help them. Many would be surprised to know that something so simple can cure them.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">That something is Pilates and stretching exercises. <strong>And yes, I said &#8220;cure&#8221;.</strong> Some people think that there is no cure for their pain. <p style="text-align: left;">Nothing possible is impossible and nothing impossible is possible.  Following this logic, one can assume limitations only exist when we deny their impossibility to change what we are at our core.  We are an amalgamation of soft tissue, bones, liquid and gasses.  If one part of your body is out of balance, your whole self suffers.  Some imbalances have greater impact than others, but all create a sense of missing something or of feeling incomplete.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Pilates can help bridge this gap. </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">With Pilates it is possible to do the impossible.  I have the privilege to observe filling the gap each and every day with my clients.  For some the gap is vast, perhaps they were in a serious car accident or recently had surgery. For others the gap is smaller. Maybe they use one leg more than the other or rotate one foot when standing.  Pilates may be used in all of these situations to reclaim balance within the body.</p>

Honing in on the source rather than the symptoms helps to alleviate the symptoms without aggressive intervention.</p>
